| “The origin of the name of McClure is uncertain and is believed by many authorities to have been derived from the Gaelic MacGiolla-odhar, meaning ‘son of the pale one,’ which was contracted to MacIlure, and then through various stages to McClure, while other authorities claim that the McClures, were a branch of the clan McLeod and that their name was a corruption of McLuide, the original form of McLeod.”
“The name is found on ancient records in the various forms of MacLour, Maklure, McCluer, McClewer, MacLure, McLuir, McLewer, McLure, and McClure, of which the last is the most generally accepted form of today.”
“Families of the name of McClure were first settled in Galloway, in the Southwest of Scotland and later spread to Ayreshire, from which place one branch of the family went into Ireland about the beginning of the seventeenth century.”
